No pro-life judges, no abstinence-only sex ed, more human embryo stem cell research

(LifeSiteNews.com) - Pro-abortion Democrat supporters have started an aggressive push to see legislation supporting abortion access brought forward, now that Republican control of the House and Senate has been ousted.
The LA Times reported Sunday on an emerging struggle between the Democratic Party’s incoming congressional leaders and the activist supporters whose demands could threaten the Party’s hold on vital support from conservative voters.
Planned Parenthood Federation of America said victories by pro-abortion candidates in conservative states, along with South Dakota voters’ rejection of an abortion ban, should lead Democrats to consider the push for increasingly easy abortion access to be a mainstream issue.
The organization is calling for more money to be devoted to promoting contraception use, demanding at the same time that sex education programs promoting abstinence, encouraged under the Bush administration, be scaled back.
“I honesty believe there was no bigger winner in this election than Planned Parenthood Action Fund and women’s health,” said Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards.
Eli Pariser, with the liberal activist organization MoveOn.org, told LA Times that Democratic leadership should be attentive to the demands of the party base.
“A huge number of people were involved in putting them over the top,” Pariser said. “There’s a huge number of people engaged and energized and ready to support Pelosi and company when they boldly lead- -and to hold them to account if they stray.”
There are also speculations that Democratic control will force more left-leaning appointments to the Supreme Court, should openings appear, as Republican Sen. Arlen Specter, for Pennsylvania, told the Inquirer.
“It could mean that the president would have to select a more moderate nominee,” Specter said. Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, warned in the November 8 edition of his Washington Update that, “[t]he battle in which we are set to engage will be the biggest one we have faced for our core beliefs. The assault against abstinence, marriage, life, good judges, and cloning may be the fiercest yet. “
