The Californication of the Economy
Eco Communismmediamaven writes "
Al Gore and Global Warming - end the insanity

By Alan Caruba

The midterm elections were held on November 7th and by November 10th the Associated Press reported that California Senator Barbara Boxer was promising “major policy shifts on global warming, air quality and toxic-waste cleanup as she prepares to lead the U.S. Senate’s environmental committee.”

“Time is running out,” said Sen. Boxer about global warming “and we need to move forward on this,” during a conference call with reporters. Noticeably missing from her Chicken Little pronouncement was any scientific evidence that (1) there actually is a global warming threat and (2) why any of the draconian proposals to deal with it would have the slightest effect.

“Boxer said she intends to introduce legislation to curb greenhouse gases, strengthen environmental laws regarding public health and hold oversight hearings on federal plans to clean up Superfund hazardous waste sites across the country.”

I call this the “Californication” of the economy because Sen. Boxer would model federal legislation on a new California law that imposed the first statewide limit on greenhouse gases, seeking to cut that State’s emissions by 25 percent in an effort to return them to 1990 levels by 2020.

The National Center for Public Policy Research recently noted that, “Despite ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, the European Uni0n is on track to miss its Kyoto emissions reduction target of 8% below 1990 levels by 2012. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the CO2 emissions for the l5 original member nations of the EU increased an average of 9% between 2000 and 2004.” Industrialized societies that require economic growth should never place a meaningless obstacle like “greenhouse gas emissions” in the way, but that’s exactly what the United Nations Kyoto Protocol does. "

The Tyranny of Numbers
Eco Communismmediamaven writes "
Environmental and Demographic Propaganda

by Alan Caruba

When America hit the 300 million mark in October the U.S. Census Bureau held a press conference and their electronic display was on the evening news shows ticking off the numbers of new citizens until it showed…what?

It showed there are just way too many people in America if you worry about things like the provision of sufficient energy, dependency on unfriendly nations for our oil imports, overcrowding of cities, uncontrolled immigration, unfunded entitlements, and a whole list of other problems.

Hard core ecologists—environmentalists is another name for them—if you get a few drinks in them will tell you we will just have to get rid of a couple of million people every month or so if the Earth is to sustain the six billion taking up space, expecting to be fed every day, driving around in cars or on motorcycles, and making more people. "

Oil, Terror & Environmental Pipedreams

By Alan Caruba

In late October I attended a luncheon briefing in New York sponsored by the Middle East Forum. The speaker was R. James Woolsey, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency and currently a vice president at Booz Allen Hamilton. The room was filled with men who represent a class of citizenry known as “influential.” Woolsey’s topic was “Energy Alternatives and the War on Terror.”

Normally, I give men like Woolsey a lot of respect because they’ve earned it. However, it didn’t take long before I began to hear views that made me begin to question, not just the wisdom of what Woolsey was saying, but why he was saying it.

“The way strategically over the long run to weaken the enemies of Israel, such as Ahmadinejad, is to weaken the role of oil,” said Woolsey. “Oil makes it harder to avoid genocide in Darfur because the Sudanese have a deal with China, and it makes it harder to deal with Iran, because China and Iran have an oil deal.”

Say what? Weaken the role of oil? Genocide in Darfur has something to do with China? Iran will not pursue its lunatic Islamic apocalypse because it has an oil deal with China? "

Al Gore and Global Warming - a LOT of hot air!

By Alan Caruba

In his book, “State of Fear”, author Michael Crichton appended an opinion entitled “Why Politicized Science is Dangerous,” and cautioned against, “a social program masquerading as a scientific one”, citing the widespread eugenics movement in the early part of the last century. (http://www.michaelcrichton.net/fear/fear_main.shtml)

“A second example of politicized science is quite different in character,” warned Crichton.  “It exemplifies the hazard of government ideology controlling the work of science, and of uncritical media promoting false concepts.”  Just as eugenics drew praise and support from politicians, academicians, and media in its time, so too has the manufactured crisis of global warming today.  (Emphasis added) This politicizing of science can be found in the way the United States government spends billions to fund various research programs. Predicting Hurricanes. Not! (Part Two)
Eco Communismmediamaven writes "

It's All George Bush's Fault

by Alan Caruba

This nation of ours is home to some of the best meteorologists using some of the best technology available. This does not mean they have any idea what the weather will be two weeks from now. With this in mind, I offer you part two of my April ruminations on the 2006 hurricane season.

In April I reminded people that hurricanes have been showing up off the East and Gulf coasts for millennia. It wasn’t until millions of people started jamming themselves together in those scenic areas that the damage wrought by hurricanes became a problem. The ocean views are wonderful, but not when they’re in your living room.

Dr. William Gray of Colorado State University has gained a reputation as a predictor of hurricanes and I pointed out that in 2005 he had concluded there would be 13 named storms with 7 becoming hurricanes. In 2005, there were 28 storms and 15 of them became hurricanes. One of them flattened New Orleans and a huge swath of Mississippi for good measure.

In April 2006, however, Dr. Gray was back, predicting 17 storms powerful enough to be named, of which 9 would become hurricanes. By early October, he downgraded his forecast predicting only one more hurricane this year and two more named storms. He did not anticipate any intense hurricanes like Katrina.

California Commits Eco-Suicide
Eco Communismmediamaven writes "

By Alan Caruba

In late August, Democrats in the California legislature and Governor agreed to a deal that would impose a limit on all greenhouse gas emissions.

As reported by the Associated Press, “The bill would require the state’s major industries—such as utility plants, oil and gas refineries, and cement kilns—to reduce their emissions of the pollutants widely believed to contribute to global warming.”

Among the many problems involved with this deal is the fact that there is no global warming as defined by environmentalists, i.e., a sharp, scientifically predictable increase in the Earth’s overall temperature in the years, decades, and centuries ahead. After touting a coming Ice Age in the 1970s, the Greens reversed course and began to conjure up global warming.

Basing public policy on a hoax has become the political choice of Democrats. Worse, the California deal would allow businesses “to buy, sell and trade emission credits with other companies.” A completely bogus market will be created where real money will buy meaningless “credits” while the emissions involved will continue.  "

Making Kids Eco-Crazy
Eco Communismmediamaven writes "
Gore and Global Warming - Anti-Capitalist Eco Propaganda

by Alan Caruba

It’s back to school time for kids and, of course, for the environmental crazies that means creating a huge mythology of things that will kill them the minute they venture into the jungle of hazards and horrors that await them in school.

The biggest hazard I encountered was a kid named Mario who, not surprisingly, ended up in jail. I did not worry about what my clothes were made from, if the acrylic paints would poison me, or the importance of using both sides of the piece of paper.

Let’s understand that, for years now, children have been taught that the Earth is virtually on its last legs and that Global Warming is sufficient for them to abandon all hope of ever being as old as their grandparents, most of whom are probably already dead from inhaling asbestos, having their lungs destroyed by radon, or being slowly poisoned from having used pesticides to kill bugs in their bedroom. Plus, those old people all ate fast foods, drank soda, and probably smoked. If they aren’t dead, they are obviously just a freak of nature."

Are you Bored with Global Warming?

by Alan Caruba

Are you bored with hearing about global warming all the time? Me, too.  The din of asinine predictions, warnings, and claims that global warming is real, i.e. a rapid increase in the overall temperature of the Earth, always seems to occur just as summer arrives when—surprise—it gets warmer.

It must have been a slow news day on June 23 because my daily newspaper ran the following headline at the very top of the front page: “Global warming is real, scientists warn.”  Since the 1980s, environmentalists have been telling us that the next Ice Age—due any day now—has been cancelled and, instead, the Earth will suffer sizzling temperatures that will make it uninhabitable.

Then, on June 25, Parade, the Sunday newspaper insert, arrived with a cover article, “How Climate Change Affects You Right Now” and the photo of a man dabbing his sweaty brow with his tie. Everything including poison ivy was attributed to the dreaded, but fictitious global warming."

Drilling for the Future
Eco CommunismMediamaven writes "
Why Gas Prices are so High...

by Alan Caruba

As the price of gasoline and the myriad products that utilize petroleum in their manufacture rises, Americans are going to ask why the Congress has resisted accessing the billions of barrels’ worth of oil and natural gas in our offshore continental shelf.

As the realization of how dependent we are on the importation of Middle Eastern oil, plus the fact that U.S. dollars fund avowed enemies such as Iran and, in South America, Venezuela, Americans are going to ask why we do not tap our own Alaskan and offshore resources.

As a matter of national security and as a significant boost to the American economy, it makes no sense to not assure and achieve a higher level of energy independence.

So why, in mid-May, did the House of Representatives reject an end to the quarter-century ban on oil and natural gas drilling in 85 percent of America’s coastal waters?

At the time, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, issued a statement that both defied logic and flatout lied, saying the vote against offshore drilling was great victory for consumers who have seen prices rise prodigiously. “In the meantime, working families are turning their wallets inside out to fill their gas tanks. It is outrageous to ask families to dig even deeper to subsidize oil drilling on undersea lands that belong to the American people.”

Americans are paying more because the global price of a barrel of oil has been increased by fears of military conflict in the Middle East, probably initiated by Iran. "

Environmental policies - How the Greens have created the Current Gas Mess
Eco Communism

As gas prices continue to skyrocket, many political experts believe Republicans will pay the price in the voting booth come November. Though most bipartisan observers of the oil industry say the President has little impact on the price of fuel at our nation's gas pumps, Bush needs to be defended in this particular case.

Many of the reasons oil prices have reached new highs stems from environmental restraints upon the industry. For example, there are ten refineries nationwide which have the ability to convert the crude oil America imports from nations like Saudi Arabia into gasoline. With the help of Democrats, radical environmentalists have made the construction of new refineries virtual impossible. Environmental restrictions have limited the number of refineries to ten when 100 would be a more appropriate number to serve America's oil consumption. The U.S. currently produces 46% of the oil consumed at home. Canada provides 11% of the crude used in the U.S. and the balance of oil comes from OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries), many of which are hostile to the United States. Experts point to the fact a ridiculous number of gasoline blends are required to meet EPA standards across the nation. Absurd restrictions have also been put on research and drilling in new sites like the minute area in ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge). In addition, environmentalists have put a virtual halt to the construction of nuclear plants in America, putting further pressure on exhaustible fossil fuels. This, in reality, has a negative impact on the environment, while nuclear energy is far safer and cleaner than many alternative fuels. Environmentalists have also restricted offshore drilling, which would further lessen U.S. dependence on foreign imports of oil.
